    Aussie View on the ACLUseless
I asked my friend Bozwell over at It's a Matter of Opinion what Aussies thought about the ACLU and if they had a similar orgination. Here is Bozwell's response.

The ACLU do seem to be a rampant bunch of tossers. In a brief look at their website it seems that they are a disturbingly large and well known group. To my knowledge there is no group of such standing in Australia. There are however lots of individual groups that don't seem to get much attention here.

Each State here has its own "Civil Liberties" organisation and whilst I'm sure that they all "piss in each others pockets" all the time they don't seem to garner much attention as a united group.

I think most people here would despise the ACLU and all that it stands for. At the moment the problems that exist here are more on a local level, in other words State by State...

The State of Victoria in which I live happens to be one of the best examples of Left-Wing -Lunacy at a political level due to it being run by a Labor (trade union founded) Government, although there are other States that are Labor-run also.

At a federal level we have the Liberal Government in charge (woo-hoo!!!) and they were re-elected by a majority landslide victory at the last federal election.

I think that the vast majority of people in Australia are rational and fair minded. In Victoria at least, there is growing unrest regarding such things as lenient sentences for recidivist criminals brought on by a focus shift away from law and order in general. That's just one thing that a whole heap of people here are becoming disillusioned with.

Our society is plagued with the views of the vocal minority and this is not helped by our heavily biased Left-Wing media outlets so often supporting their causes.

The good news is that having had a two minute surf of their website (and I honed in on "Prisoners Rights"), I think that America has the right attitude towards crime and punishment. The fact that the ACLU don't like what is going on regarding this particular issue only lends weight to what is already happening...in other words, whatever they bitch and moan about--just reverse it and you have the correct answer!

There are serious problems in Australia with crooks having the upper hand and victims rights being ignored. I have always thought that mandatory sentencing and for that matter the Three Strike Law are wonderful ideas. Sadly though we have none of these laws in place that I am aware of.

Perhaps the closest thing to something similar to the ACLU here would be "The Greens"--a rampantly Left-Wing political party that can scream loudly enough but fail to convince the voters at large.

I have always thought that the relationship America and Australia share is something special and that somehow if a hybrid of both cultures was to be adopted we might find the mix to be an excellent one.

The ACLU obviously deserve to be treated with contempt but I think the George Costanza attitude may serve it well...Let's do and think everything opposite to them and we cannot lose!
